Effective public speaking is considered a lifelong tool for continued success because it not only makes one look favorable in front of others, it makes the person more confident and comfortable. Public speaking can help someone whether it is at a job interview, or reading a speech in front of millions. When someone has effective public speaking skills, they come off as confident and ready to seize the day, while others who lack in the public speaking department may come off as nervous, unprofessional, and unprepared. However, to be an effective public speaker, one must have a powerful speech. Having a powerful speech ensures you will get one will get their point across to their audience, and make them not only hear, but feel one’s speech. A powerful speech is not just an introduction, some examples, and a conclusion, but rather a reflection of who the writer is. The audience should be able to hear this speech and be engaged and attentive throughout, not bored and thinking of what is for dinner later. There are many components to a powerful speech, for instance, the sandwich. Writing tips like the sandwich help deliver a powerful speech more efficiently. A powerful speech can only be defined as how much one pours themselves into it and how much they are interested in whatever topic. If the speaker is not enthusiastic, the audience will not be either. The most memorable skill I have gained from taking this class overall has not been publicly speaking, but rather a stronger grip on essay writing. This class has taught me not only how to make eye contact and how to stand while presenting, but also how to capture my audiences attention, and keep them interested in what I have to say. I went into this class an okay writer and came out a stronger writer, ready to conquer whatever is thrown at me. The skills I have learned in this class I will be able to carry with me throughout my future, with everything from making a toast at my sister’s wedding, to simply writing a letter to a friend. I consider effective public speaking a lifelong tool and will ensure continued success.

Question 1: it's is considered a lifetime tool because you'll never know when you'll need to make a speech or become a best man and make a toast to the groom
Question 2: body language quotes and a tight sandwhich
Question 3: the most important skill I learned was how to write a speech and make a good tight sandwhich. As well as being able to posses and maintain good body language.

hey jaclyn,
i definitely agree that a well written speech reflects the writer's thoughts and feelings. Hearing countless examples means nothing if the speaker does not feel a connection to what they are saying. When the speaker feels a connection it makes it much easier for the audience to feel a connection and be more interested.

Public Speaking is considered a lifelong tool for success because it will help you with interviews for job opportunities and for every presentation. Employers will see you have the right body language and be impressed. Also your bosses and coworkers would see you can present new ideas to them. People will see you are confident and calm while speaking to an audience. This is a high valued skill many people want. You will be using this throughout your life and this will get you through the hardships of presenting. The thing that makes a powerful speech 'powerful' is the sandwich and attention getter. Other things that make it powerful are your voice, hand-gestures, and eye contact. You must always start with an attention getter to bring the audience into your speech. Make your voice heard and speak clearly and confidently. Eye contact is big because the audience will know that you know what you are talking about. Also by not looking at the paper, your voice will be easier to hear. Hand gestures make the speech powerful because the audience will get into it more and be more interested in it more than just someone who has their arms by their side throughout the speech. By doing the sandwich, the audience will understand the speech more because it flows more. They will know the beginning and the end. Sandwiching a speech brings readers and listeners back to the top because it flows gradually. The most memorable skill I have gained through Public Speaking is to not use like or um as much and to be overall much more confident while presenting. While my writing skills have improved, I believe the small things like eye contact and gestures have been the greatest skill. My confidence about presenting went up because we presented many speeches and mad minutes which will improve over time. The skill will benefit me in the future not only in interviews or presentations, but in talking to new people and talking to professors in college. Effective public speaking is a lifelong tool because it helps you by giving you more confidence and an overall success in your life goals.

Hey Pat,
I agree with you that the sandwich and attention getter is what really makes a powerful speech powerful. Without something to grab the listener's attention and a strong conclusion, the speech isn't nearly as powerful.

Effective public speaking is considered a lifelong tool because it allows the speaker to display his or herself as prepared and confident. Especially in the workplace, presentations could be considered part of the job description. Mediocre or ineffective public speaking results in an impression of insecurity, disinterest, and a lack of preparation. Public speaking is crucial to the increasingly cut-throat workplace.
I believe that emotions make a speech powerful. If the presenter is not interested in the topic, then neither will be the audience. Much like Steve Jobs used to be, the presenter has to love or be inspired by his speech topic in order to convey his or her point accurately. Without proper emotion, whether it may be persuasive, informational, a eulogy, or acceptance speech, the audience will not absorb the presentation and the speaker will have left his audience knowing nothing more about his topic than before he or she started.
The most memorable skill I have learned from Public Speaking was the sandwich. A novel has a problem to start the story, and a resolution to end it. A speech doesn't have a problem and it does not tell a story. So the sandwich is the "resolution" so to speak: a way for the whole essay to come together nicely at the end. Public Speaking has taught me the sandwich in full. Through this technique, my speeches have the flow of a professional presentation. Public Speaking has taught me the best of public presentations and has allowed me to perfect my skills and fix my mistakes. Effective public speaking is now and will be a lifelong tool in the cut-throat workplace and in Public Speaking, I have learned that exactly.

Hi Rebecca.
I agree about what you said about emotion making a speech powerful. Making it personal just seems to really enrich the topic. Enthusiasm is good but I was thinking along the lines of a speech about one's personal experiences. One of the first speeches I heard was about this girl's experience with the mistakes her cousin made. It really hit me deep because emotion is something that everyone has in common.
The metaphor you gave about the sandwich being a novel was very interesting. Previously, I imagines it to be like a circle, where there's no beginning and no end. I never thought of it like a novel before.

Public speaking is considered a lifelong tool because it is important to know how to conduct yourself in front of people. Who wants a presenter or co-worker who turns into a babbling fool in front of a large group of people? Public speakers are confident about the topic they are presenting making the topic more interesting and relatable. Whether it is a wedding, birthday, graduation, job interview or work presentation, everyone will have to give a speech. A powerful speech is one that is presented in a way that strikes the audience. When a presenter is able to successfully manipulate the audience’s feelings and keep their attention, it is successful. The most memorable skill I learned from this class is being confident in my own ability. When I did my first speech, I was so nervous. To me, the writing part wasn't the hard part. It was standing in front of everyone. I feared messing up and making a fool of myself, just as most people fear it. Once it was over I realized it really was not as bad as I thought it was going to be. Granted everyone was nervous about presenting their first speech, but the class knowing I was nervous seemed to make me even more nervous. I imagined my first speech as it is portrayed in the movies and I would be a sweaty, babbling, nervous mess. Looking back, the first speech was not that bad. When I presented my final speech, I knew what I was talking about and was much more confident. I hope in the future I can bring that confidence to more than just speeches, but to everything I do.

Hi Sarah,
I agree with your opinions. Similar to your problem, I too had a difficult time with presenting, not with the writing. At first, when I used to present my heart was pounding and was really nervous because I thought I was going to make myself look and sound like a fool. As the class went by, I improved too, seeing everyone was also nervous at first and I was just over thinking things. Confidence is one of the most memorable skills gained from public speaking.

Hey Sarah,

I agree with your statement about how a public speaker should be confident. If one is not confident with what they are saying the audience will not listen to the speaker and they would not pay attention and lack in interest. I could not agree more with the fact that manipulating ones feelings makes a powerful speech. The audience wants to feel moved and captured by the speech. They want to walk away with it being memorable. I had the same problem. I thought making eye contact was weird and being in front of a room was awkward, but ass the class progressed i found it easier. I am more confident now and i am sure you will be to!

Effective public speaking is considered a lifelong tool because it helps you to present in front of others. This can be useful at work when giving a presentation, in college, and when you are talking to a group of people. You have to know how to speak to a group to be successful.
Emotion makes speeches powerful and memorable. When a speaker is emotionally invested in their speech, it causes the listener to become emotionally invested as well. Emotion makes speeches more powerful and engages the listener better.
The most memorable skill I have learned from this class, like Rebecca and Nick, is the sandwich. This will help me to improve my writing and speaking, making me a better presenter. The sandwich is a tool that will benefit me forever.

I completely agree with the fact that putting emotion into a speech makes it more interesting and engaging for others. When people are dull and boring in their speeches your attention tends to wonder off to other places instead of listening to what the speaker has to say. But when there is emotion and liveliness, the audience tends to pay closer attention and stay more involved.

Public speaking happens every single day, whether it be formally or informally. There is no way to escape speaking to people in your everyday life. Having the tools to efficiently get your point across is a key to your success. Doing the little things, like keeping eye contact and not using phrase fillers, are all ways to improve your speech and make others take you seriously. All these things come with time, though. Practicing not being nervous in front of a group of people will ensure that the audience fully understands what you have to say. It is quite clear when one is not comfortable in front of a group. The audience is left in an awkward position and, instead of listening to what is being said, is concentrating on the behavior of the speaker. Public speaking is a tool that is important to a lifetime of continued success.
A powerful speech is made when the speaker feels very strongly about his or her subject matter. It becomes evident to the audience when the speaker simply does not care about what he or she is saying. How are they supposed to care when the person who is doing the talking doesn’t? When the speaker is interested in the topic, the audience is much more likely to remember it. This is a crucial part of making the speech “powerful”.
The most beneficial skill I learned in public speaking was using the sandwich technique. This is not only important when writing a speech, but it can be used when doing any type of writing. It reminds me to make sure my conclusion ties everything back together. I also found that using the same attention getter in the introduction as well as the conclusion makes my speeches more cohesive.

Hi Mikaela.
I agree with your statements on how the little things matter. Things like avoiding eye contact and using phrase fillers seems to just degrade one's credibility. It simply is not professional at all. It is not a lack of confidence, it is a lack of ability. Students can get away with it because we have no experience but others older than us can not. While this may seem harsh, the role of the speaker is to keep the audience interested in the speech.
As for the sandwich, it seems to keep coming up as many people's most beneficial skill. I have always thought of it as a circle, as in there is no beginning or end. Another person thought of it as a novel, as in how there is usually a resolution.

Effective public speaking is considered a lifelong tool for continued success because people are constantly having to present things, such as, an eulogy or just a simple speech for school. Public speaking will assist people in teaching them how to use presentation space, keep eye contact with the audience, and learn confidence when presenting. Confidence and preparedness in public speaking is essential because it assists in getting the point across and it grabs the attention of the audience since they know what the presenter is doing. A powerful speech is one that grabs the attention of the audience and that makes the audience capture the emotions of the presenter. Also, a powerful speech consists of the sandwich. The sandwich is a strong component of any writing whether if it's an essay, presentation, tribute, etc. Having a powerful speech will assist the presenter in getting the point across to the audience. The most difficult aspect of public speaking is keeping the audience's attention and make them feel what the writer wants to make them feel, if that occurs then it is a powerful, successful speech. The most memorable skill I have gained from this class is being able to speak infront of a crowd without getting nervous to an extreme that it sounds like I am about to cry. Other skills I have learned from this class would be body language, posture, and the “sandwich”. These skills will be of benefit in the future in a way that it will assist me whenever I need to present anything in school, in the workplace, or an occasion. These skills will allow me to sound presentable and grab my audience attention without looking like a fool. Public speaking is considered a lifelong tool because it makes one prepared for either their job interview or a toast. One utilizes public speaking almost everyday of their life. Whether one is presenting a school project or chatting with friends, there are always components in their speech that indicate their feelings and knowledge towards the subject simply by observing one's body language, eye contact, and their tone of voice.
These devices used in public speaking, are what make one "powerful". Without maintaining open body language, your audience may feel uncomfortable and not seem interested into what you are saying simply by utilizing poor body language. Without maintaining good eye contact, your audience may believe that you do not care about your audience and it makes one look insecure and shy, instead of looking confident and relaxed.
I believe the most memorable skill i have gained from this class is how to "sandwich" a speech. This skill will benefit me in the future because I will be writing papers for the rest of my life, and without exercising my knowledge of the "sandwich", my speeches will not be uninformative, not factual, and out of order. Without this public speaking tool, i would not be able to correctly write any college papers or even college resumes. Public Speaking taught us to feel pride in what we talk about and how we express ourselves.
To make a speech "powerful", it needs to include REFQ. (reasons, examples, facts, and quotes.) All of these components are needed to form the "sandwich" of the speech. The sandwich must be correctly created in order for it to pierce the mind of the audience.

Effective public speaking is considered a lifelong tool for continued success. This is because it can help alleviate ones fears, build confidence, create good people skills, and is great practice. Many people are fearful of speaking to a large group of people because they are afraid of attention and it makes them uncomfortable. With public speaking ones fears would be diminished and they will start to portray a more effective speech without saying "like" or "um." Public speaking is also great when building ones confidence. Being confident is the key to giving a speech. Confidence lets the audience know that the speaker understands what he or she is saying. Confidence can be seen when the speaker gives eye contact with the audience and when they use voice modulation throughout their speech. This enhances ones speech and makes the topic more interesting. Public speaking also creates good people skills. This is because in life a first impression is everything. For instance, job interviews rely on a great deal of how one presents themselves. Public speaking also helps with people skills such as when it is appropriate to pause, how to be interactive, small critical mistakes, and knowing when to use humor throughout a speech. All these things are factors when engaging the audience. Lastly, public speaking is great practice. Instead of practicing in front of a mirror one would practice in front of a group of people to obtain a more realistic scene to prepare oneself for the real moment.
There are many things that make a powerful speech. A powerful speech is something the audience can relate to. Using powerful words throughout ones speech can also be effective in the tone of the speech and are advised when trying to send a powerful message. Having a good opening statement can also make a powerful speech because it makes the audience think and want to continue listening. Using the proper form of humor is advised when making a powerful speech because it relieves tension. The most important thing to a powerful speech is to make sure your topic and words hits home because an audience will carefully listen to a speaker who can relate to them and moves them. Lastly, make sure the speech is memorized, and when presenting a speech make sure the speaker is comfortable in their own voice and to slow the speech down and change the tone of voice.
The most memorable skill i have learned in public speaking is the sandwich. The sandwich is when the conclusion is almost identical to the introduction but flows to wrap up all the details back together with the memorable statement. This skill will benefit me in the future because it will help me perfect my essays, improve my writing skills, give an effective presentation and lastly help me with my job or my college essay and other important aspects in life.
Public speaking is a class everyone should take some point in their lives. It can benefit them in their everyday skills, job opportunities, other classes, and formal occasions. Public speaking has taught me a great deal of things and without it my grades in my writing classes would not have been so high, so this is why effective public speaking is considered a lifelong tool for continued success.

I think the tools you learn in public speaking are considered a life tool because you can use them in everyday situations. This class helps you be more confident and better skills to make other people feel comfortable. This class helps you be more confident and better skills to make other people feel comfortable. There are many things that create a "poweful" speech such as the sandwich, and good topic, quotes, good body language, and eye. The most memorable thing that I have learn from this class was the sandwich and how it is important to sandwich everything you do. Now I make sure all my essays are sandwich before handing it in. Also a simple thing making a big difference is not using the word you in my essays or speech. I handed in four short essays in English yesterday and before handing them in I went through and took out every you to replace it with another word and I had got a 95 for all four essays. I know for a fact what I have learned in this class will help me in life situations which is why I think it is counted as a life tool.

Effective public speaking is a lifelong tool because it will simply be used for as long as you live. You communicate with people everyday, whether it is with a single person or on a stage with thousands of audience members. In order to go about communicating with your audience effectively and successfully, having good public speaking skills is very necessary and helpful. These skills will be used for as long as you live in events such as interviews, speeches, presentations, and certain fields of work.
The aspect of a powerful speech that makes it "powerful" is the connection the speaker makes with the audience by using a combination of emotion and body language. The emotion is what really makes the connection, what makes the audience truly understand what the speaker is trying to convey to them. Good, open body language gives the speaker confidence, and makes the speaker presentable and easy to pay attention to. A solid combination of the two provide the speaker with easy access to the attention and interest of the audience, making a powerful speech "powerful."
The most memorable skill i learned during this class is definitely the "sandwich" method of writing speeches and essays. The sandwich method provides a strong introduction and conclusion, allowing the speaker to get their point across easily and effectively. This method is a tool I now use every time I write an essay, with great success. I will continue to use this newly acquired skill along with the many others I have learned in this class, as having effective public speaking is a lifelong tool. As for the success, it will only continue.

Effective public speaking is considered a lifelong tool because speaking in front of others is something that can not be avoided. When the time comes, being prepared and confident will be the difference between succeeding and getting embarrassed. This class has given me the tools to successfully drive across my point when speaking in front of others.
A powerful speech is made powerful by knowing the audience. Knowing who will be listening gives the power to adjust and strengthen the speech to target those in the audience. For example if it is presented in front of co-workers or even someone's boss, then facts and evidence will be important to support the main idea. Knowing people's colors that describe their personalities like blue, orange, gold and green can help to appeal to those in the audience.
The most memorable skill I have learned was the sandwich. It is so simple and powerful, yet before taking this class I had no idea what it was. Being able to repeat my ideas at the end of my speech really drives home the point I am trying to get across. Now I know to sandwich not only my speeches but my essays as well.

Effective public speaking is considered a lifelong tool for continued success because it can help one develop overall confidence, as well as communicating more effectively with others, and just be more comfortable talking in front of crowds of people. No matter where one goes effective public speaking is a great tool. Whether it be going on a college interview to just having a regular conversation, when one shows confidence it makes the person look better and makes the people around them feel more comfortable. For example, if someone is very nervous while talking in front of a class, the people surrounding them may become nervous as well just because of the vibe they are sending off. But when someone shows confidence and comfort the surrounding people feel it too. Not only that but one will be able to communicate more effectively because their speech and body language will be flowing and comfortable. Throughout effective public speaking the most memorable skill I have gained was learning how to make a “sandwich.” Learning how to do this enables me to be able to have a better-written essay or speech. This skill makes a person able to restate the main idea at the end just to remind everyone the overall point of what one was talking about. Not only that, but also the sandwich helps keep the paper organized and flowing throughout the whole thing. This skill will help benefit me in the future because while applying for colleges I will be able to have an introduction and conclusion that leaves a lasting impression on those reading it. When evaluating an essay people look for organization. By using the sandwich the essay will be well organized and effective. The skills I have learned in effective public speaking will help me in many things from making a eulogy to a long presentation. These skills will be carried on and used throughout the rest of my life and will be a continued success for many others.

Effective public speaking is considered a lifelong tool for continued success because of the numerous scenarios where this could be quite useful. There are many things that can make a powerful speech “powerful”. Eye contact, body language, knowing the material are all things that can make a powerful speech powerful. Eye contact will help in various situations, whether it be a job interview or a presentation because eye contact breaks down the barrier and cause the person given eye contact to make a connection, however brief. Body language is important, as in closed or open. This is essential because a good speaker should always be aware of how they are standing, sitting, or moving and use it to enhance their presentation. One should never cross their limbs and make an effort to appear “open” to suggest that one is friendly and approachable. When making a speech, the speaker needs to know his/ her material in the sense that the speech is memorized enough to appear confident and avoid phrase fillers. Nothing is more off- putting in a speech than when a speaker slips out an “Umm”. The most memorable skill I have gained from this class is creating the sandwich. While I have yet to use the sandwich effectively in day- to- day activities such as emails or texts, I have been making an effort to use the sandwich in all essays, regardless of the subject. The skill of creating the sandwich will no doubt help me be a better writer and keep me on track when writing future essays.

Effective life long speaking is something that we will need because we will be required through to give speeches for jobs and events that we take part of. The sandwich makes a speech powerful. It makes all of your ideas come together and makes your message powerful. The biggest thing that I have taken away from this class is to not use like or as. These words can kill a speech and now that they are out of my vocabulary my speeches have become more powerful. Also to make more eye contact. This shows that you are confident with what you are presenting and know the material and are not just reading straight from your speech.

In any profession, public speaking is required. Whether it is a large presentation, or a simple argument between coworkers, it is important to be able to have the skills to present yourself and your opinions skillfully with finesse and grace. Even before entering a profession, being able to present oneself well is pertinent for interviews, whether for jobs or for colleges. Also, having a powerful speech is very important. Presenting ones idea requires skill, emotion, and practice. A critical component of a powerful speech is an eloquent speaker. Large words and big vocabulary can help, but are not necessary. Being an eloquent speaker is just being able to use correct grammar and have a rhythm and flow to the speech. I took this class to gain better public speaking skills, and the best skill I have gained is getting over a fear of presenting. I have been able to speak in front of many people with a clear voice and eye contact, which will help me in interviews for jobs and colleges. This class equipped me to speak confidently in front of others, which is a skill I shall treasure and use for the rest of my educational and professional career.
